Analytical Detection Awarded U.S. Patent for Advanced Ion Mobility Spectrometry Technology
LAKE FOREST, Calif., August 25, 2026 – Analytical Detection LLC, a developer of next-generation explosives and narcotics trace detection systems, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent No. 12,716,867, titled “Methods and Systems for Ion Mobility Spectrometry.”
The newly issued patent covers systems and methods that use an internal calibrant, temperature sensing, and target-specific mobility relationships to improve the accuracy of chemical identification by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). The technology compensates for temperature-dependent changes in ion drift time, enabling reliable target identification without requiring the high-temperature drift chambers typically used in conventional IMS systems.
This patented approach is incorporated into Analytical Detection’s BeagleX™ 100 platform, which combines ambient-temperature dual drift tubes, proprietary calibrant and dopant chemistries, a non-radioactive ionization source, and advanced signal processing. The resulting system is designed to provide industry-leading resolving power, high sensitivity, reduced false-alarm rates, rapid start-up, and lower power consumption.
“This patent protects one of the foundational innovations that allows the BeagleX platform to deliver exceptional accuracy and long-term stability under real-world operating conditions,” said Andrey Vilkov, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of Analytical Detection. “By accounting for temperature effects on individual target compounds, our technology maintains precise chemical identification while eliminating the complexity and energy requirements of conventional heated IMS systems.”
The patent names Andrey N. Vilkov, Joseph A. Widjaja, Jack A. Syage, and Brent D. Goldberg as inventors. It expands Analytical Detection’s intellectual-property portfolio covering core IMS methods, advanced calibration, and trace detection of explosives, narcotics, and other hazardous substances.
